THE FIRST THING ELOISE noticed upon waking the next morning was how calm she felt. The second was the taste of sea salt on her lips. Third was the sand digging into her hip.

She had fallen asleep on the beach?

It had happened before, so it wasn’t the most alarming discovery. That title she reserved for the awareness of a body shifting at her side. A warm, snoring, distinctly male body. A shirtless male body. The steady rise and fall of his warm chest beneath her palm was evidence enough.

Eloise bolted up, all the way to her feet. She clutched desperately at her torso, both surprised and relieved to find her clothes on and everything in place.

Nothing had happened.

Her sudden exit from Julian’s embrace had roused him and he was easing up, blinking around the beach.

Gazing up at her, he shielded his eyes from the sunrise and moved to stand.

The memory of his words and lips from last night, and the way she’d felt had her stepping back.

“G’morning,” he said, voice deep with sleep.

She traced the dark ink on his arm, distracted by it. “Morning.”

A thick, black vine curled around the length of his arm, starting at his wrist and up past his bicep. Between the leaves, five different flowers were spaced evenly on the vine, each a shade darker than the last and slightly larger.

She’d seen many men shirtless the last few months as she’d trained the Order. None of them had tattoos. In fact, she couldn’t think of anyone born and raised in Dathoviel that had one, particularly no one that lived in the castle. Such things weren’t tolerated in court, but then again, Julian did have one foot in, and one foot out of castle life. If anyone could get away with something like that, surely the court jester could.

“Sleep well?”

She scoffed, hoping he hadn’t noticed her investigation of his arm. “I would have slept better in a bed.”

His eyes flashed with lust and she took a second deliberate step back. She’d stepped back because she wanted to step closer and lose herself in his kiss again. To feel his arms around her and her chest pressed tightly against his.

She must get away from him. She had to—shit! She needed to find her father. And deal with the sand in her braids. They were leaving in a few hours, and she still hadn’t packed.

“I recommended a bed.” Julian smirked. “And a few other places if I remember correctly. You said no.”

She could have screamed from frustration.

“Can you put your shirt on, please?”

He chuckled, dropping his inked arm from above his eyes, and bent to retrieve the folded navy fabric from the sand. She’d used it as a pillow, apparently.

He stood once more and tugged it on, lips quirking, eyebrows dancing on his forehead.

“Is this where you tell me last night was a mistake, and you don’t know what you were thinking? That it can never happen again?”

Part of her brain begged her to say yes. To banish every memory and forbid him from mentioning it.
